The largest provider of retail health care in the U.S. has paired with the largest health care insurer in the mid-Atlantic region to offer new health care options to consumers.

healthcaresymbolMinuteClinic has become a participating provider of all CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield insurance plans in Virginia, Maryland, and D.C., according to MinuteClinic.  Nearly 3.4 million CareFirst members now have in-network access to MinuteClinic health care centers within certain CVS/pharmacy stores in Maryland and Northern Virginia.

“By offering high quality treatment in a convenient setting, we are working with CareFirst to help reduce health care insurance expenses for its members as well as time spent away from members’ families and the workplace,” said Chip Phillips, MinuteClinic president, in a statement.

MinuteClinic health care centers are staffed by nurse practitioners certified to treat common family illnesses such as strep throat and small infections.  Common vaccinations such as influenza and tetanus are also offered, according to MinuteClinic.

Treatment information is shared with a patient’s primary care physician if he or she gives consent, and patients can also download their MinuteClinic visit summary to an electronic health record.

MinuteClinic used to be a participating provider with CareFirst’s preferred provider and federal employee plans in Maryland only.
